The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique business identification number issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and is mandatory for anyone intending to import or export goods and services from India. No individual or business can engage in cross-border trade without obtaining an IEC. For services or technology-related exports/imports, an IEC is required only if the provider is availing benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or dealing in notified or restricted services. IEC can be obtained by various types of entities including Proprietorships, Partnerships, LLPs, Private/Public Limited Companies, Trusts, HUFs, and Societies. Post-GST implementation, the IEC is aligned with the PAN of the applicant, although a separate registration must still be completed with the DGFT.
